This year is the 153rd anniversary of “The Siege of Port Hudson.”  Visitors will have access to volunteer reenactors in Union and Confederate campsites performing typical activities of the assaults.  Soldiers dressed in authentic reproduction uniforms will be on hand to answer questions pertaining to the siege during the summer of 1863. The three branches of the services—artillery, cavalry and infantry will be portrayed as well as sailors, cooks, laundresses, dancers and sutlers.  There will be an afternoon dance at 1pm that is open to audience participation, and an evening dance at 7pm.  More events at Port Hudson are listed on their blog.

The  Friends of Hilltop Arboretum in cooperation with the Bartram Trail Conference will commemorate the 240th anniversary of naturalist William Bartram’s visit to Louisiana by the dedication of the first of five historical markers that includes a quote from Bartram’s book “Travels” that describes the natural, eighteenth century environment he saw in Louisiana at the different sites.

A Civil War Christmas- 150th Anniversary Reenactment Battle of Alexander’s Creek - 6pm

1860's evening wear

Visitors will see a recreation of the sights and sounds of St. Francisville in 1864 during the American Civil War. Throughout the day walk through the soldiers camps and see Living History demonstrations of soldier life. You will hear black powder weapon demonstrations of both rifle and cannons. Each day will feature a small reenactment of the October 1864 Battle at Alexander’s Creek which happened near the park. On Saturday night the plantation comes to life during the Holidays as it shows off its seasonal decorations. Costumed guides accompany the visitor in a trip into the past through the candlelit Oakley House. See the glow of the blacksmith at work, take a taste of what’s cooking in the kitchen, or just enjoy the live period music. Included is our yearly Christmas dance and hot Christmas Punch.  Dancers will perform in the theater.

LVD will not be performing.  This is a listening opportunity.

Bobby Horton will perform a free program commemorating the Civil War Sesquicentennial including stories and authentic period music. Local food trucks and the cash bar will open at 5:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

Speaker Bio
A seasoned performer, Horton is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, and music historian. He has performed with the musical- comedy trio Three On a String throughout the U.S. and Canada for more than 35 years. He has also produced and performed music scores for 13 PBS films by Ken Burns including The Civil War and Baseball, two films for A&E, and 16 films for The National Park Service. His series of recordings of authentic period music has been acclaimed by historical organizations and publications throughout the U.S. and Europe.
